Requirements For A Live Reef Food Fish FisheryThese requirements recognise the need to observe and respect the long-term interests of people dependent on fishing for food and livelihood to the extent that it is consistent with ecological sustainability. The requirements also recognise the importance of fisheries management and operations being conducted in a manner consistent with established local, national, and international rules and standards as well as in compliance with the Standard. This section addresses the requirements for a wild-capture live reef food fish fishery and is divided into three (3) parts. Part 1: Development of New Fisheries recognises that there are biological, social and economic risks associated with commencement of any new LRFF fishery. In order to protect both the resource and the communities who depend on these resources, it advocates the need for a policy and process to be adhered to where a new LRFF fishery is being proposed or developed. Part 2: Management Requirements for New and Established Fisheries applies to both new and established fisheries and addresses the planning and management aspects of the trade that are the responsibility of government agencies, regional bodies and research institutions, and operational issues within the trade that affect fisheries participants (fishers, traders, exporters and importers). Part 3: Operational Requirements for New and Established Fisheries
applies to both new and established fisheries and addresses the use of
destructive fishing techniques and fishing practices detrimental to the
health of fish and fish stocks. While aimed primarily at the operational
behaviour of fisheries participants (fishers, traders, exporters and importers),
these requirements will need to be considered by those with responsibility
for management of the trade.
